Buying a Van

The most important decision you'll make all summer will be deciding on which van will be your home for the next few months. It's worth spending a bit of time on research before you make the purchase. Have a look around and give yourself plenty of time. If you can swing it, buy your van at the end of the summer as it'll be a buyer's market and you'll probably save a heap of cash and have more choice.

What to Look For

There are plenty of different types of vans out there from pop-tops to school buses to old ambulances. There will be lots of vans on the market that have been around Europe a few times and will already be fitted out or you can always have a crack at buying a transport-style van and fitting it out yourself. The minimum price you'll probably be looking at is £1500 for an old, semi-crappy van. Make a list of what you want in a van - number of seats, storage space, fitted with beds, a kitchen, a hose to pee out of while still on the road... you get the idea. If you've got a few mechanical type son board you might be able to get away with buying a cheap shitbox but if none of you know how to pop the hood then you might want to invest in something a bit more roadworthy.

Where to Look

There are some dealers specialising in vans or you can go for a private sale. Buying from a dealership might prove more expensive but if you're pressed for time it'll beat running around all over town looking at vans. If you're looking to buy privately, check out The Gumtree, Loot, eBay or Auto Trader.

Before You Go

Make sure you get your potentially crappy van checked out before heading off on your trip around Europe. You'll also want to make sure your van can be insured because if it can't, there's really no point buying it. Vehicles over 20 years old or not registered in the UK are pretty difficult to find insurance for.
